Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in optometry?
A: I’ve always loved science and learning how things work, but I also really enjoy connecting with people, so optometry felt like the perfect combination of both!
Q: You completed your residency with Northwest Eye Surgeons in Sequim. What drew you to the residency program, and what was most valuable about that experience?
A: I wanted a residency that would allow me extra exposure to ocular disease, to better understand and care for patients in the future. NWES residency stood out because I got the opportunity to work with ODs and MDs, not only learning about the clinic aspect but also the surgical aspect of treatment as well. Apart from the clinical experience in ocular disease that was gained during residency year, establishing connections and learning from other providers in the community / being involved in interdisciplinary patient care was also a very valuable experience (as part of the residency program, there was 1-2 days each month where I spent the whole day at a different specialty clinic – e.g. glaucoma specialist, retina specialist, strabismus specialist). The bonus was spending a year in Sequim, a beautiful place to live and also surrounded by a really great group of very supportive coworkers (doctors, technicians, clinic staff)
Q: After completing your residency, what made you want to continue your career with Northwest Eye Surgeons?
A: I already know people within the NWES and the culture, and I really liked what I experienced during residency. The type of care where we solely focus on medical eye care was also very appealing. The providers at NWES are really willing to collaborate and we approach almost all things as a team dynamic which is very refreshing
Q: Are there particular areas of eye care that you especially enjoy or have developed a strong interest in?
A: Medical eye care, eye conditions that have an added layer of complexity. My current focus is glaucoma, cornea, and surgical and cataract co-management
Q: How would you describe your approach to patient care?
A: I would describe my approach as very patient – focused. Growing up and helping translate for my mom during her medical appointments gave me an appreciation on the importance of clear communication and patient education. Providing education on conditions and treatment, and helping them understand and feel confident in the medical decision making. My goal is to explain things in a way that is easy to understand, and help patients understand what is happening and know someone looking out for them
