If you or someone you love has glaucoma, you know that managing it can feel like a full-time job. Daily eye drops, multiple medications, missed doses, and side effects – over time, it all adds up. The good news? Glaucoma care is evolving, and new options are helping make treatment easier and more consistent.

In a recent Sight Partners webinar, glaucoma specialist Aaron Kuzin, MD, shared how newer treatments like iDose® TR are changing the way doctors help protect patients’ vision.

Why Eye Drops Aren’t Always Enough
Glaucoma is a lifelong condition, and even with treatment, it can slowly damage vision. Studies show that many patients still experience vision loss over time, often because eye drops are hard to use perfectly every single day.

Common challenges include:

  • Forgetting doses
  • Trouble getting drops into the eye
  • Side effects like burning, redness, or dry eyes
  • Managing multiple bottles and schedules

As Dr. Kuzin explained, it’s not about effort—glaucoma treatment is simply hard to manage long term.

A New Way of Thinking About Glaucoma Treatment

Traditionally, glaucoma care followed a step-by-step path:
Drops first, laser later, surgery last.

Today, doctors are taking a more proactive approach—treating glaucoma earlier and reducing reliance on daily drops when possible. This may include:

  • Laser treatments
  • Minimally invasive glaucoma procedures
  • Long-acting medication implants

One of the newest options is iDose TR.

What Is iDose TR?

iDose TR is a tiny medication implant placed inside the eye that slowly releases glaucoma medicine over time—up to one to three years.

What patients like about it:

  • No daily drops for many people
  • Steady, around-the-clock eye pressure control
  • A quick procedure that can be done on its own or during cataract surgery
  • The implant can be replaced when needed

In clinical studies, many patients were able to reduce or even stop their glaucoma drops after receiving iDose TR.

What Dr. Kuzin Is Seeing in His Patients

Dr. Kuzin has performed more than 70 iDose TR procedures and has seen encouraging results.

  • Many patients were able to stop one or more eye drops
  • Some no longer needed drops at all
  • Eye pressure was lowered safely and consistently
  • Side effects were generally mild and temporary

The procedure itself takes just a few minutes and is usually well tolerated.

Is iDose TR Right for You?

iDose TR isn’t for everyone, but it may be a great option if you:

  • Struggle to remember or tolerate eye drops
  • Have dry eyes or irritation from medications
  • Want more consistent pressure control
  • Are already planning cataract surgery and hope to reduce your drop routine

Your eye doctor will help determine the best treatment plan based on your individual needs.

If glaucoma treatment feels overwhelming, you’re not alone, and you may have more options than you realize. Talk with your eye care provider to learn what’s possible.
