Surgery is the only effective procedure to restore sight once the cornea has been severely damaged. The outpatient corneal transplant procedure is an organ transplant, whereby the damaged cornea is replaced with a healthy one. Corneas for organ transplant are provided by the eye bank which carefully screens all corneas to ensure safety

Penetrating Keratoplasty with Femtosecond Laser
Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue. The Femtosecond laser is used to cut corneal tissue through the application of numerous adjacent pulses. The Femtosecond laser is controlled by software and allows for greater precision to match the exact shape of the removed and donated corneal tissue. The use of the Femtosecond laser to create incision patterns that fit together exceptionally well means that fewer stitches are required. Using the Femtosecond laser provides better-quality vision, with less astigmatism and fewer aberrations, compared with transplants using a conventional trephine (surgical blade). By using the Femtosecond laser for PKP, this procedure becomes an all laser corneal transplant.
