The Procedure
Laser eye surgery has been used for more than two decades to successfully correct vision. Currently available procedures are LASIK (Laser In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). The LASIK procedure is the most popular and has proven overwhelmingly successful for thousands of Northwest Eye Surgeons patients.
The LASIK surgery itself is relatively painless and quick - about 15-20 minutes for both eyes. The IntraLase laser is used to create a flap on the surface of the cornea, exposing the cornea’s middle layer. The surgeon then uses a computer-guided laser to reshape the inner layers of the cornea. When used by a skilled and experienced surgeon, the laser is precise and safe, able to remove a single cell without affecting other cells. The corneal flap is replaced, and heals rapidly.

In certain situations PRK laser surgery may be recommended instead of LASIK. This is often the case when a person’s cornea is too thin or misshapen to safely allow creation of a LASIK flap. (
